Science of Breath #54: What Time is It?

  • What time is it? Or rather, what is time? As defined by Wikipedia: “Time has been defined as the continuum in which events occur in succession from the past to the present and on to the future.” That is a quite simple explanation. This definition also goes on to explain time as a “one-dimensional” concept. Is this idea accurate, or is it appropriate for us to reconsider the nature of this subject? In my opinion, it is an ever elusive idea that scholars have always struggled to capture.
In my estimation, time is a circle. With this the past, present, and future all exist within the narrow window of the now. Is this hard to comprehend? Well, it should be, considering that Western ideologies view time in a linear manner. Meaning, we conceive of it as a straight line. An example of this type of thinking would be to say that we are all born at point A, and we die at point B. Thus, we can plot the time between these two events, in observing quantifiable phenomena.
However, traditional shamanic and indigenous philosophies would state the contrary. This perspective would state that we are born at point A, and die at point B, but would posit that both of these states of being are always in existence. They do not oppose one another. It makes sense if we consider that once we are born, our birth does not cease to exist. It is still very present within our very being, otherwise we would no longer exist. Does this make sense? I admit, this is pretty heady stuff, and I’m making myself sweat just by writing it down. Yet, I think it is important enough to challenge myself to communicate this to you.
In fact, I once had a heated argument with my philosophy professor about this very subject. It got so intense that the entire class remained still as we bantered back and forth with this weighty idea. I’m not claiming that I completely understand these concepts, but I am willing to challenge the commonly accepted notion of one dimensional linearity. Physicists have supposedly proven that the Universe is in a constant state of expansion and contraction, much like the in and out motion of our breath. If this is true, is it not possible that “time” being a characteristic of the universe, also expands and contracts along with everything else?
These are all things that I ponder in the highly charged moment that we call “now”. Life seems to be changing rapidly via technology, nature, and our choices about how we live. Quite possibly, the whole 2012 phenomena could simply be about humans gaining an awakened notion of “time”. Maybe, we are only focused on a small slice of what is actually an entire ocean of reality that is waiting for our acknowledgment. Just some things to consider…as we move..the Science of Breath.
