Science of Breath Radio 65: To Evolve

  • Zumbi & Zumbi808 present Science of Breath Radio

As I watch the life cycles of revolutions across the planet from the comfort of my living room, I can only think of the future. What does it hold for us, and for our brothers and sisters living in turmoil right now? It’s an intense question, one which begs for an answer. Yet, there is no answer, not now at least. Thus, I am left with the question lingering on the tip of my mind.
Watching Libya and at least 6 other countries struggle with the process of governmental reform is an eye opening experience. In this age of downloads and status updates, technology is both a catalyst, and a monitor for what is happening across society. We get up to date news (in most cases), if we are persistent enough online. It feels as if true change is actually possible in this era of instant communication.
When I think of all that is happening, I am reminded of the Donald Byrd song “Dominoes”. It’s as if the shift in Egypt has given wings to many other countries who suffer under long corrupted dictators. The old regimes are falling to the wayside, like dominoes. This moment is reminiscent of the late 60′s, when radical change was occurring in our country as well as across the globe. This thought leads me directly to: what would it take for such overt action to take place in the United States? From my viewpoint, we are too content with material goods and junk-food media to be riled out of our sleep. This is true, at least for the moment. However, what if gas was unaffordable for the middle class, and a loaf of bread cost $12? Would that be sufficient cause to unite Americans across social divides to champion a common cause? I wonder. America was born out of revolution, and thus our leaders are acutely aware of it’s presence. They have done a superb job in pacifying us. Yet, it is my guess, that as we move forward, we too will be pressed with our backs to the wall. What will we do when our number is called? To quote Angela Davis “If they come for me in the evening, they will come for you in the morn.” Think about it.
